Mattel is celebrating their new launch of the new Barbie Basics™ Collection by collaborating with the 12 members of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Each designer has Barbie in their own creations of a little black dress. The Barbies are up for bid on EBay with all proceeds going to CFDA's educational initiatives and scholarship program.

Winter Doldrums

Wow, I have neglected to write about any purchases, fashion dreams, frankly anything interesting. These winter months have unfortunately zapped any motivation to be stylish. I mean, I purchased a fun winter coat, I have an endless supply of new boots that I seem to always get good use of within days of purchase (i.e. already scuff up) but I guess I just do not have much of an interest in winter wear.

Firstly, I find dressing for winter is expensive! Heavier materials and the use of more fabric only seems to jack up the cost. I would die for a chunky knit cardigan from Chloe, but that price tag is not justifiable especially during short winters we have here in Charleston. Many fashionistas in colder cities have effortless winter looks that I would love to duplicate in my own wardrobe. The warmer climate finds me complaining about 50 degree weather, wishing it was warmer, yet I throw on a down jacket.

Secondly, my efforts to dress have become very uninspired. From throwing on my jeans, long sleeve shirt, Patagonia fleece vest, thick chenille socks, and my knee-high Dani black boots to my black blazer, two pairs of black tights, a fun dress, and suede heels as my going-out attire. Sounds reasonable, right? Not until you realize that only the dress changes each night I go out, and only the long sleeve shirt changes during the day. I know, this is far from exciting. I am stuck in a winter outfit rut!

So with this negative, cold fashion energy, I'm ready to be optimistic awaiting the arrival of warm weather, bright colors and prints. Hopefully from this cold February day on out, I will gradually break out of the winter browns, blacks, grays, and blues, replacing them with yellows, reds, oranges, purples and greens. (Somehow) I'll manage what is in my closet and subsequently incorporate some spring wear into the mix thus making my wardrobe more transition-friendly.

I only dream of the warm Spring when shorter dresses and skirts can come out to play in bare legs and fun sandals. Until then, layer on and stay warm.

After a ridiculous, inexcusable hiatus from this wonderful page, I, or better yet, WE are back. Back from wherever it was we lazily disappeared to. To every one's benefit I'm sure, I will skip all the niceties, apologies, and New Years resolutions in favor of an actual mini-editorial to kick start the week.

In Washington, D.C. it has been beyond tolerably cold. And it pains my poor fingers and toes each time I have to step out in the early morning hours to haul it to the Metro. Thus I cannot imagine the pains people must have been experiencing yesterday for the "No Pants Day" on the subway. I was fairly unfamiliar with this event but saw a link to the BBCNews website today with a little blurb about it and found it to be quite an ingenious idea. I love the fact that it has such a global following, no matter how small in some places. From New York City to apparently Australia groups were organizing pantless transit exploits.

I have no shame in admitting that I am curious to participate next year for not only does it sound silly and liberating, but it gives me an excellent opportunity to show off what's not normally advertised: underwear. Ivy knows how much I love Cosabella lingerie but I may have to find something a bit more modest. Adorable cotton boy shorts should suffice.

Bottom line: this small global craze to apparently "lighten the mood" seems a bit extreme, but who says it's not worth a giggle or two.

Stress Relief

During an emotionally high stress point, I find much relief in purchasing items. I think the fact that you know something good is about to arrive in the mail is always a mood booster.

Rue La La has a dangerous winter multi-brand sale of handbags, outerwear, clothes, denim, and shoes right now. I dabbled in the outerwear and handbag sales and found myself purchasing this lovely wool Laundry belted coat (originally $350, purchased for $129)

and this beautiful black suede Gustto Crossbody hobo bag (which reminds me of the Gucci Hysteria cross body bag that I die for, originally $675, purchased $169).

Plus I had $20 in credits at Rue LaLa. So retail value spent $995. Saved $708!! Can't wait for the packages in the mail! I surely keep the UPS employees busy. Ha.

UPDATE: Just bought an Ali Ro dress... Thanks Gilt... ($108, was $206, I should feel amazing right now.. hah)

It's cold. Frigid, wet and, frankly, unbearable. The remnants of a tropical storm are barreling us East Coasters over right now with no sense of "tropical-ity" about it. This leaves me a) wishing for the holidays in December (I'll be away, somewhere fabulously warm), and b) wishing for a new, cozy winter coat. Thus I have found temporary solace in browsing for items to suit both moods.

I love this belted puffer. If anything, it's the subtle addition of the "belt" that makes me leap for J.Crew's staple winter fix.

Ahhhh, to prance around the balcony wearing nothing but light cotton gauze and (maybe) a bikini underneath. I'm dreaming of December and wearing Calypso's dreamy top.

Paris Fashion Week is going on and, reluctantly, I had to decline my invite from Karl to be front row next to Katy Perry and Rhianna...Sorry to admit that I am now stuck here at work on a rainy day in a lab coat and jeans. Stalking Style.com all day, though, has proved to be a descent alternative. Dries Van Noten, a particular favorite of mine, exhibited a definitive safari/tribal influence in their S/S 10 with the use of bold colors and patterns. The draping is elegant, the fit and style, very casual. But it's the smaller details in Dries' shoes and jewelry that make me melt.

I have been searching around for the perfect Fall shift dress. I came across this Geren Ford dress on several online boutiques, and found them to be all sold out. I cannot wait to wear this dress with some brown flat boots, or my black booties, or some killer heels.

Not only will I proclaim this humorous brand’s bout of marketing genius, but also their mock-timeliness. When fashion week is undoubtedly a time of haute couture display, creative achievement and craftsmanship, we must now preplexingly brace ourselves for the infomercial, mass-produced blanket with arms. After my brief hiatus, I am ready to endure the ritual of blogging my everyday online shopping ventures. With the lack of funds, my purchases have been scarce, but that doesn't stop me from looking! Over these past two weeks I have turned a new leaf and have decided that change is always good. So what future changes do I have in store? I have my plans to kick it up a notch, make my life more exciting. Maybe throw in some bright pumps and tops, take a few styling ideas from Rachel Roy's Spring 2010 RTW collection.

I am going to retire the cotton sundress for now, and mature to a flirty silk cocktail dress. Rebecca Taylor Spring 2010 RTW.

There are more changes ahead that I hope will benefit me sometime soon. I have a new feeling of confidence and identity that I can now hold my chin up higher than before! Bring on the higher heels!

Today marks the start of New York Fashion Week and no sooner than in the blink of an eye will we start to see reports – trend, style, and grade reports of designers’ S/S 10 collections – than the drooling over the new montages will begin. The heightened spirit of anticipation pervades the air surrounding not only the fashion tents and runways staked out in Bryant Park and around the city, but also that of myself and many other people interested in fashion as a ready-to-wear statement of one’s persona as well as in fashion as a form of art.

I saw this on the Wall Street Journal's Blogs page - love the colors and silhouettes that designer Frank Tell created for the Spring 2010 season

Fashion begins as someone’s creative scheme and from paper to the first stitch in fabric the process oozes originality and innovation. Just as a painting begins as a skeleton sketch, either in the burrows of one’s mind or on a piece of cardboard, clothing and haute couture creations are products of imaginative planning and inspiration. As the lights shine on runways of designers eagerly desiring to project their ingenious creations to the critical eye, I hope that this aspect is kept at the forefront. Though tough economic times continue to shroud the industry with seemingly endless woes (the price tags can seem ridiculous, items too extravagant) it is vital that we celebrate the continued artistic display of material morphed into shapes, sizes and gravity-defying fantastical concoctions which exceed our own imagination's dreams.

This morning as I stepped out onto the terrace of my studio a delightfully surprising sensation prickled my pores; chilly dawn air wrapped me up in what I took to be nature’s first signs of the coming change in seasons. A shift in weather not only brings a change in ones wardrobe (whites for blacks, sandals for ballet flats) but a change in the produce found at the farmers market. My boyfriend and I ventured out to Eastern Market late this past Sunday to scour the market stalls for items for the coming week’s dinners. Our theme, we decided, would be papaya salsa. What better way to usher in the changes than saying a festive goodbye with tropical fruit and refreshing recipes. Picking up fresh, large ripe papayas, mangoes, colorful bell peppers, pungent cilantro and juicy limes, we were more than eager to get chopping as we walked home.

Papaya & Pepper Salsa [Modified by Lauren]

1 large ripe papaya, halved and seeded
2 bell peppers, yellow, orange or red (mix up the colors!), diced
2 limes, juiced
½ red onion, chopped
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tsp. cayenne pepper
¼ cup chopped cilantro
1 tbs. olive oil (more to taste if needed)
With one half of the seeded papaya, remove the skin and chop into cubes. Halve each of the peppers (set aside one half and mix up the others for a colorful addition to the dish) and dice. Add prepared ingredients to a large bowl. Drizzle the juice of two limes over the produce mixture. Mix in the chopped red onions, salt and pepper, and 1 tsp. of cayenne pepper. Toss in the chopped cilantro and mix. Drizzle with olive oil and toss to coat.
Prep time: 30 minutes
Yields: 2+ cups of salsa
Storage: air-tight container for up to 7 days

We made fresh fish tacos with this as a garnish. So enamored with our creation were we that we ate the whole of what the recipe yielded (using organic blue corn tortilla chips to mop up the remains). With the other half of the papaya, peppers and onion we’ll make another batch later in the week for garnish on a salmon fillet as well as for a seared tuna salad.

Woodstock: 40 years later and peace, love & fashion still resonate

One fantastic weekend in August 1969 on a remote farm field in New York state more than 400,000 lovers of music, art (and more) converged to take part in what is now the lore of Woodstock. Entranced by the music as much as the culture that the three days of this festival enlivened, I am equally fascinated by the level of fashion culture that is still quite prevalent and emulated by designers even on runways today. The grand bohemian look that defined the latter part of the ‘60s – long flowing hair with intricate braids, wide-leg jeans and belts, rosy red round glasses, peasant tops and sinuous dresses – continues on as an insignia for the free spirited hippie attitude.

From Diane Von Furstenburg's S/S 2009 runway to today's release of Ang Lee's "Taking Woodstock," we still find ourselves reminded of the themes and ideas that sprang forth from the fields of peace, love & happiness.

From Coachella to Lollapalooza, a myriad of days-long festival concerts have their stake on the summer calendar. A lovechild of Woodstock? One could argue that its influences can be seen throughout these music-and-art fused events. And fashion certainly, at least today, continues to live up to the free-spirited attitude that Woodstock was made famous for.

As I browse through the incoming Fall trends, I notice everything is either really tight, or really big and loose. So you either have to suck it in and buy spanks, or look like your swimming in your outfit. Personally, I think I would rather swim in my clothes. The oversized clothing gives the facade (to me at least) that I am smaller and helps hide any bloated times of the month. We all know we don't want to be wearing tight stuff during then. Also, I feel more comfortable eating and drinking in these loose tops and dresses, NO RESTRICTIONS!

A Chit Chat reader had suggested to me to blog about bags. Now specifically she did not say what kind or type of bags to focus on, so I believe it is up to me to decide on this topic...

So I thought back to my middle school and high school days, where I thought I was awesome for carrying around a Kate Spade bag, a classic nylon bag that I bought with the money I saved up from my summer job. After that, I carried around the cool canvas hobo I got from H&M, then a nylon hobo my mom got me from Club Monoco, and in between them all, some Hello Kitty tin boxes that I thought were cute enough to hold my money and lip gloss. Now going through college, I remember seeing the waves of canvas totes and Vera Bradley bags. I chose not to carry one of those types of bags, but my Jansport backpack. I cared about saving my posture with all those books in the backpack. After the school year, I moved on to the summer working my seasonal job. I am trying to remember what exactly I was saving for at the end of the summer with the money I made. Probably back to school clothes and shoes, but now I am starting to think about what I should have invested in with saving that money. Easily knowing that in college, the majority of my money was spent on going out and contributing to the beer fund, but it is nice to have a product of luxury and self-accomplishment that you bought yourself. One summer during college, I saved up enough money to buy a pair of Tory Burch flats. Each time I look at them now, I am proud that I invested my money into a a great pair of shoes that I will be wearing for a while. As for purses, I believe the earlier you start to get out of the canvas totes and cotton quilt bags, the better your more mature, and post-college style will be. Plus, if you bought something of great value, you are more inclined to take care of it. So no more leaving your purse at the bar, because these ones you worked for and earned!

My Inner Battle with Burberry

[Preface: when I went into writing this inspired rant, I really had my own preconceptions, prejudices and the like that made my original dialogue in this piece seem rather self-righteous. Then a novel idea came to me: possibly a bit of research to ground my accusations, to solidify my convictions? This all may sound slightly melodramatic, however, I am well fit now to proclaim my hate-love-make-fun attitude of Burberry’s prolific presence in the historical haute fashion world.]

I accompanied my boyfriend this past weekend to take advantage of Nordstrom’s semi-annual sale of which he was quite excited (shockingly) to explore. Come to find out, though, he was more excited about buying a Burberry tie (or two) on sale to add to his collection of inventively patterned plaid/check garments. (I prefer “plaid” though it is considered the “Burberry check”). I am confounded by his love of the signature plaid - whether the bland khaki color pattern or subsequent variations thereof - truthfully, I just don’t see the appeal.

One could hark back in the annals of the fashion house - from the war-era creation of the “trench” coat to the brand’s recent financial and creative comeback thanks to Christopher Bailey (the Creative Director at the helm of the iconic vessel) - quite of lot of influence weaves through the fabrics of each historical occurrence. However, I can’t seem to escape my inner conundrum with the plaid. History aside, it still does not interest me. (This, however, coming from a girl who treasures her “vintage” Louis Vuitton handbag – classic and regal in every sense of the powerhouse’s name though just as blandly prevalent and accessible to the public. Hypocrisy at it’s most superficial.)

There are two sides to the equation, and part of my homework for this inner duel of fashion consciences allowed me to stumble across a Harper’s Bazaar piece from September 2008, an interview taken with Bailey the day after he presented his Spring/Summer 09 Collection in Milan. An incredibly modest and passionate young designer sprang forth from the page’s descriptions of his history in the fashion industry. Not only that, he threads, subtly, his background as an art major in college with his love for various genres of music into his designs and overall presentations of collections. A personal and universal touch that not only resounds, it penetrates through the eyes of his audience. Whether that audience is an older woman established in the English countryside who swears by her check-lined Burberry trench to the young 20-something muse who’s equally modest presentation of Bailey’s Prorsum collection peppers fashion publication pages. There is something to be said and therefore accepted for a brand’s ability to touch such a broad range of individuals and interests. That is, after all, the essence of fashion, and thus the requisite reasoning needed for my wonderful boyfriend’s style predilection.

Back-to-school shopping signs are hanging everywhere! It's crazy to think that Fall is coming up so swiftly. Lucky for me, though, the Charleston sun and warm Summer air hangs around until October, so my shorts and sundresses will still be of use.

Saturday night we celebrated Lexie's 23rd birthday, shes the baby of the group, and wearing the asymmetrical blue dress, a steal from Forever 21 at $19! I am wearing my new Joie wedges with a Forever 21 Necklace. bracelet and skirt, and an American Apparel Bandeau Bodysuit. All my girlfriends are so fashionable! I love just regular pictures of a girls night out. No fancy cameras or special lighting techniques, just a quick group picture depicting such a fun time.

Furniture Shopping

Time is flying by way too fast. My lease is over at the end of this month and I am dreading the whole moving processes. It was just a year ago where I moved into my lovely Queen St. apartment. Now I am off to move 3 blocks away to a 2 bedroom townhouse. The only furnishings I have are for my own bedroom. Even with this furniture, I don't I have enough storage items to keep all my clothes tidy. I have tons of cheap plastic storage bins to hold my socks, undies, bras, and bathing suits, but they are all already spilling out (maybe it's time for me to actually edit my closet... anyways). I am not trying to buy investment furniture pieces since I am only making so much. So at the cost to updated posts on Chit Chat, I have been searching every minute of the day for cheap, used furniture. So far I have found an over sized chair, a over sized couch, and a sitting chair, all neutral solid colors, for $200 (it's sad to think that my recent Joie shoe purchase costs more than three pieces of furniture, eeekks). All these I have found on Craigslist.org which is a savior for used furniture. Everything is in fair condition and easy to incorporate with the decor. I am currently still looking for a kitchen table, rug, and maybe some bookshelves (to display my shoes :) ).

If you are a cheapo like me who wants a deal on furniture, here are some places to check to find some awesome used stuff:

I found this kitchen table and four chairs on Craigslist.org the other day for $20!!!! People drop prices for a quick sale! Unfortunately, someone beat me to this sale, because I never heard from the sellers. BAH!

Craiglist.org - I check this site every 5 minutes for furniture. You have to contact the sellers fast since other people are often looking at the same things. Beware of wholesalers and what not, there's a lot of over posting by these places. I prefer purchasing from the owners because if they have multiple items on sale, you could bargain a group cost. The majority of transactions require cash payment and pick up only. So make sure you have a friend that has a truck to haul the larger pieces.

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore - Lucky me that there are various locations in my area of this store benefiting local Habitat for Humanity organizations. People donate old furniture and furnishings, most of which is in excellent condition. The ReStore sells the items at great deals and the volunteers can help you load the furniture in your car. Its kind of like a big yard sale warehouse, except no bargaining :( .

Local flea markets and antique shops - Charleston is filled filled filled to the rim with antique shops. If you look around the stores hard enough, you could find some potentially great items at reasonable prices.

Goodwill - Obviously the one and only place to go for 80's Prom gear... But they do get some wonderful donations of decent furniture. I have found some neat framed art work here as well.

She is fashionable yet simple, classic and daring all in her own right. My Boyfriend's Back Joie Wedges in Caviar, $226 on Bluefly.com

They are MAGNIFICENT!

Browsing through Shopbop.com, I noticed a pair of black Joie Wedge sandals. Seeing that they retailed for about $400, I decided to look for something similar. Well, the past few weeks I have been searching several online shoe venues for anything close to these shoes. Nothing has necessarily satisfied my wedge craving. Until today. I found the Joie wedges on Bluefly in my size! Not only that but they were on sale, a huge markdown from Shopbop. I debated for a good hour and a half whether or not it was worth the purchase, since it was still a steep price to pay ($226 but way better than the original $378 price tag). I caved in, though, and breathlessly typed in the credit card number hesitating but one second before I completed the order. Taco Boy Downtown

Taco Boy is infamous for its laid back setting and incredible drinks that tend to ground people over on Folly Beach. Lucky me that they have just opened a new location downtown right off of the Ravenel Bridge. Their menu includes typical Mexican fare (tacos, quesadillas, margaritas) that is fresh and full of flavor. The downtown location is surely becoming a night time hangout for dinner and drinks. Some of their great beverages: the Frozen Screwdriver and a $10 flight of top shelf tequilas.

I celebrated Summer Solstice last night at the downtown Taco Boy location where at Las Olas sponsored a premiere of The Present, a surf film. The film was projected and presented on the spacious outdoor courtyard of Taco Boy. This outdoor courtyard also allows pet owners to bring their dogs! (8 max at a time).

H Street Country Club

This past Saturday night, at the behest of a wonderful friend, a small group of us ventured out to H Street's newest eclectic addition: the H Street Country Club. Though it was stuffed full of people when we arrived a bit before 10:30 p.m., we were able to secure a few seats at the upstairs bar thanks to our gracious hostess, and the rest of the night was delicious history.

By history, I mean a verifiable source of people watching and gossiping. From the hipsters to the preps, skinnies to the cropped critter capris, I cannot think of a better mix of people partaking in alcohol, food and genuine urban fun. What appeared to be vintage toasters and bird houses "flying" above our heads became the cozy space's subtle source of light; the wall behind the bar encased a waterfall of golf balls, and drinks and bar fare were no less creative. A favorite of the night was the fittingly named "Par Bar" cocktail as well as the guacamole and a pineapple chimichanga.

Though it was insanely busy, with a wait at the door at times and at least a two-hour wait for a tee time on the putt-putt course (oh yeah, how could I have forgotten to mention that mild particular!), we sampled enough of the atmosphere to want to come back for another round. Hopefully dinner followed by a healthy round of golf and drinks?!

What the Concert Czar Should Wear...

I received my daily ShopBop.com newsletter. Today's highlights: "4 Styles in Heavy Rotation." Such styles are very accommodating to Ms. Lauren's previous posting about the Concert Czar. So let's just stereotype the modern concert goer... Yes many of them go in jeans and a t-shirt, but now it's utterly "cool" to go in 80's shredded leggings and shirts, and in acid wash denim. To me, that is what the new age concert goer would rock out in, and why not? Who knew it would return back into the fashion cycle?

I personally do not think the shredded legging trend would suit my vertically challenged stature (it would only make my short, stubby legs look like they are ripping out of the seems). The Concert Czar

In light of these dynamic political times, it seems that just about everything gets a tricky name attached to its purpose. For instance, the “czar” is one moniker splashed on many a high-profile individual's ever-expanding resume of responsibility. (If you are unfamiliar with this, just reference here; blogging about it could take a novella to explain.) My boyfriend and I are currently planning a few upcoming events for our calendar, which can range from sporting events (soccccceerrrrr!) to films and theatre (Shakespeare rocks) to my absolute favorite activity: CONCERTS. Just moments ago in a gchat correspondence (because what else does one do at work) he dotingly deemed me Concert Czar of the Committee for Musical-Events-to-Attend.

Kombucha: Don't Leave a Natural Foods Store Without It

Somehow about two years ago I discovered Kombucha. Specifically G.T. Dave’s which Whole Foods was selling back then for a steal of $2.50 per bottle, though now it’s not uncommon to debit out about $3.50. Totally worth it for this apparent magical elixir of microscopic organisms thriving in an ancient Chinese brew.

My obsession began after I read an interview with Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis who was gingerly sipping a bottle throughout the conversation, noted the journalist. Thus, many hundreds of bottles later, I continue to be incandescently hooked believing that my perpetual “natural” glow is attributed to its holistic ingredients.

Ivy now loves it too, and not just for the apparent fad that it has become (W Magazine covered the handsome man behind this brand). At the end of the day, and one-ish bottle later, a healthy sense of invigoration and balance transcends the stresses accumulated.

Hi my name is Ivy, and I am 5'1/2''.

I lied on my DMV papers and said I was 5'1''.

I have my seat all the way forward in order for me to reach my gas and break pedals in my car.

I am deterred from buying designer jeans because I am too lazy to get them hemmed each time.

I cuff all my jeans.

Maxi dresses and long gowns also require hemming for me to wear them.

Knee length skirts are ankle length skirts on me, and mini skirts are knee length skirts.

I wear tunic tops as dresses (because I can).

Long winter coats/parkas make me feel like I'm in a sleeping bag.

Many people refer to me as short, I like to correct them and claim that I am petite.

It's not too difficult to get around the vertical challenge when it comes to fashion, but it is discouraging to have maxi dresses in season and have to worry about getting it hemmed (it is more money and more time until you could wear it). Now many retailers are including a petite section in their women's line. The opportunities for the shorter world are opening up!

Banana Republic has great petite items for the working woman.

Athleta (sister store to Banana Republic and GAP) has petite sized athletic pants!! (No more self hemming by cutting the extra fabric off of your gym pants.)

Revolve Clothing has some styles of Citizens of Humanity jeans in petite sizes. (No more dragging heels and trips to the tailor)

Bright, graphic prints were splashed all over the Pre-Fall and Fall runways. Amidst the blacks and grays, the addition of a fun, colorful top or dress speaks volumes.

Again, to reference the brilliance of French fashion, Balenciaga nails it again not only embracing color and pattern, but creating a piece that is both whimsical and strong. Everything a woman ought to be.

And though I love Prada for being a powerhouse of fashion and avant-garde ideas, the piecee below from its Fall 2009 collection just does not strike the right cord with me. I'm very much a fan of the gladiator trend, but this is taking it to the next level. Art for art's sake, I dare say.

Treat Yourself

With the stresses of work, money, body consciousness, and relationships (family, friends, and lovers) how does one cope? I find it hard for me to write any distress down in a journal or discuss my deep issues with a confidant to vent. Yes I keep it in to a certain extent and I realize that it is not healthy to swim in a head full of personal stress. So in order to detox and expel these stressors, I have made an appointment for a body massage and salt scrub. This being my first time, I am anticipating the awkwardness of my lying half naked on a table. But I will be there to relax, so I must not have a worry in the world once I enter the spa, right? I am hoping for the achy-ness and tension my body is going through right now will soon be released. I believe I deserve this, and I believe others should definitely treat themselves to days of luxury and pampering. On that note, I also believe everyone is entitled to buy themselves something of luxury as well. For my retail therapy, I purchased a Adina Reyter necklace on sale at Hautelook for $50. : )

Sailing, It Takes Me Away...

Last Wednesday marked the beginning of the Summer Race Series held by the Charleston Ocean Racing Association. My boyfriend and I were invited onto one of the raceboats, the Buena Vida. I have never gone sailing before and had no idea of the sailing lingo, but I was shortly taught how to duck and switch sides of the boat each time they were tacking. All I was concerned about was not getting in the crew's way or getting hit in the head by the mast. Here are some photos of a wonderful afternoon out on the Charleston Harbor. (I only wish I was glamorous enough to have worn some nautical clothing, but I had a feeling I would be the stand out amongst the the crew who had their racing faces on.)

There’s always a moment in a girl’s life where, well, things just click. Or at least they appear to…in that very moment where you’re standing on a wooden stool, cleaning the cabinets of your brand new ¼ kitchen space, of your ancient “English” basement rental in the middle of the city. A summer thunderstorm has just paraded through as if to brusquely announce your arrival: Freedom!!! A grown woman at last!

Frankly, I am currently in the middle of my (maybe) 12x12 studio; glorious, overbearing brick fireplace (it does work, fabulous) starring me down for its grandeur towers over the room making it a bit more of a home compared to four thrice-painted over walls of bland ivory. The question I’d like to ask, though, is why didn’t someone tell me earlier that moving out and onwards from the nest could be so indifferently liberating? A semi-contradictory statement that may be, I, being the oldest, have always been tightly held on to. And now I am able to pack up, move (though not too far) from home and begin a bizarre state of adulthood – or at least independence.

It’s a small modest space, really. But to me it’s pretty near perfect. Not much is needed – I don’t need a palace, a palazzo in the middle of Naples with a grand veranda upon which to have an afternoon espresso. Just me and my books; the fresh air streaming through the open door; the sight of the intricate ivy sculpted out of the wrought-iron staircase above; the scent of the fresh, cleansing summer rain precipitating from the crisp blue sky above blotted with thick, cumulus clouds, opaque and comfortable.

Sigh.

Now to tackle the boxes. God, I hate unpacking.

Amidst the stresses of moving, both the physical act of as well as the financial and emotional rollercoaster of relocating, the last thing one would want is to be bound up in the periodic stressor of a relationship. Just as moving has it glamorous points to the adventure – reinventing your space as home, both creatively and functionally – it also has its rough moments like getting to know that new space and adapting to its kinks and gradually revealing flaws. I’m finding that out slowly both in a new home as well as in a relationship. I am a grown-up, almost-25-year-old woman and yet this is only my second relationship ever. The silliest things seem skyscraper-tall the moment they implode. But just as any old advice column will tell you, communication is certainly key. Not only the talking (or venting), but the listening-part is perhaps the most vital. Skip over that, and, well, there’s little reconstruction that can be done down the road.

A wise woman recently reminded me of the relationship rollercoaster: now you’re starting to settle down out of the "honeymoon" phase. And learning more. So it’s the learning/teaching part where you need patience. Amen.

And on that note: I really, really want this Alexander Wang bag. This, for me, is the definition of “love at first sight.”

A Beaker is a Vase...

I drove into work today noticing the wonderful and colorful blooms of a hydrangea bush that we have outside the building. During my lunch break I decided to cut a small bunch to add some so-called "glamour" to my florescent lit laboratory. I did not think that the styrofoam cups provided by the water cooler would suffice for this chic decorum, so I opted for a 400 ml glass beaker. There is much beauty and humor with having this small floral arrangement in a beaker. I guess that just adds to nerdiness of my lab occupation. I'm glad I can still put some character into it.

Chit Chat Woman of the Week (part deux): Charlotte Gainsbourg, in honor of Cannes

I love Charlotte Gainsbourg. She embodies that casual chic elegance of la Parisian of which she of course is. I just envy her ability to make such simplicity look so easy. The mademoiselle recently won over the Cannes Film Festival’s hearts, garnering the top female acting award for her portrayal of a grieving wife in the graphic art film "Antichrist." She is modest, minimalist and muse to Balenciaga’s Nicolas Ghesquière (her shoes at the awards are to the fashion house’s credit) making her in my opinion a triple threat – actress, chanteuse and, in this case, fashionista extraordinaire.

I would first like to greatly apologize for not prefacing our absence with reason. Over the past week or so Ivy and I have both had some life-altering moments - some planned and some sudden. Most importantly, Ivy lost a dear woman in her life, her grandmother this past week unexpectedly. Having been able to see my fabulous friend persevere through such sadness, I was more than privileged to be a part of such cultural and familial celebration for a woman who's impact was very grand and very dear to those her life so selflessly touched.
I, very excitedly, moved to the very place I have dreamt about for the past couple of years: Eastern Market in Washington, D.C. Hopefully once settled, moved in, with credit cards maxed out because of very important and necessary purchases for my new petite maison, I will have ample subject matter with which to write about. From fun neighborhood routine (the market for fresh produce on Sundays, boutique coffee and cupcake scouting on any given day of freedom from the 'nine-to-five') to my attempt at cooking for one in my new studio, I hope to find much to experience and share.

I am inspired by her color palate and want to base every outfit of mine on her paintings! If only she did fabric prints, they would make the most amazing scarves and dresses. With neon color and prints in season, I thought I could find some pieces with Jennifer Sanchez's color vision:

Chit Chat Woman of the Week: Olivia Wilde

Frankly any woman who can grace the cover of Maxim’s Hot 100 issue deserves woman of the week in my book (I will hold out to a few exceptions, though). Olivia Wilde is a gorgeous, fashionably daring 25 year old ingénue. At 18 she eloped with an Italian Prince and is openly bisexual (oh, but to dream! … about the Italian Prince, of course!). Currently, you can find her gracing slick HD Flat Screens in the medical drama “House” where she plays an equally interesting female role. Oh, and just to spark some nostalgia: one should most certainly remember her as the daring, rebellious blonde on “The OC” who seduces Marissa to be her lover. Bravo, Maxim! Well picked.

A+O Dress.. So bright and fun!

I found the dress that I will be wearing to the wedding this weekend, this Alice + Olivia Strapless Safari Dress as mentioned in "Monday Woes." Last night I was looking through my pile of shoes to see if any would complete the outfit, and I thought a couple might be able to...

My cream Calvin Klein Dail's or my brown Nine West Balboa's

But now I'm thinking a nude heel... Ideally I wish I could wear this timeless pair of Nude Christian Louboutin Simple Pumps, but that's out of the question.

Sigh...One day....

With Endless.com and Zappos.com having overnight shipping... I could potentially search out a new pair of nude shoes for the wedding by Thursday, and then receive them on Friday. So lets just see what shoes are available on these sites:

rsvp Dolly Peep-toed Pumps, $105. These are cushioned by Footpetals, probably great for the reception dancing! The price is still slightly steep for me at the moment.

Nine West Rocha, $79. A good alternative to the Louboutins!

BCBGeneration Ariel Peep-toe, $89. Simple peep-toe, very wearable with any outfit.

Obviously I need help, either I spend more money... or use what I have. I think I am clinically a shopaholic? Yet, I think the only treatment is retail therapy...
